    In an interview with Mike Wallace, Morgan Freeman chided the veteran reporter for his support of Black History Day.  Beyond the fact that a day is an insultingly insufficient period of time to celebrate such a giant part of human history, Freeman's real point was that we should be at a stage when blackness or whiteness, or any other color or ethnicity, is irrelevant to human interaction. I'm not black; I'm Morgan Freeman; you’re not white or Jewish, you're Mike Wallace.

    Homelessness is up.  The once iconic National Health Service is failing.  State education is regressing to standards that would shame Alabama or some bush school in her one-time Empire.  But to argue over the kingdom's sicknesses is to wonder whether a man is dying of his cancer, his tuberculosis, his chronic malaria or the multiple injuries of his latest car crash.  And our differing political and social attitudes to these apparent causes of death will deflect us.  Who cares why he’s dying?  The poor sod will soon be dead. That’s all that’s important.

    What’s more germane is not the actual cause of death but the cause of the cause and that is pretty clear – a concatenation of thieves and incompetents in The City, bandits in Parliament and voraciously greedy bastards in what’s laughingly called the Upper Classes. It's one thing to want more and more; quite another to determine that no one else should have any.

She is, after all, the ruler… the Queen… Her Majesty… She doles out Grace and Favor and honors.  (I wonder if she sees the irony of tapping a fornicating, drug using rock star on the same shoulder – as it were – as a humanitarian philanthropist.  I wonder how she feels about knighting a middle rate film producer who, according to a more acerbic friend, dropped to his knees every time she reached for the butter knife.  Perhaps she comes to peace with the trivializing of a national honors system by pointing out, privately, that it’s ‘her’ government that makes the recommendations.)
